Timor-Leste Independence - Then and Now
Timor-Leste Independence - Then and Now
Join the Labour History Society (South Australia) for a public meeting exploring the history and legacy of Timor-Leste's struggle for independence, followed by our 2026 Annual General Meeting.
From the Indonesian invasion of 1975 through decades of occupation and resistance, the East Timorese people fought an extraordinary struggle for self-determination. The campaign for independence inspired a powerful international solidarity movement, including in Australia, where trade unionists, activists and community organisations played an important role in supporting the Timorese cause.
Twenty-four years after independence, Timor-Leste continues to confront major political and economic challenges, including ongoing disputes with Australia over oil and gas resources in the Timor Sea. Our speakers will reflect on both the history of the independence struggle and the issues shaping Timor-Leste today.

At 3.30pm, immediately following the discussion, the Labour History Society (SA) will hold its Annual General Meeting. All executive positions will be declared vacant, and members are warmly encouraged to attend, nominate for the Executive, and help shape the Society's activities over the coming year.

The Labour History Society of South Australia invites you to the second instalment of our monthly reading group.
Join us at 2pm on Sunday 6 September at the Exeter Hotel, 248 Rundle Street, East End where we’ll be discussing “Who Are Our Enemies? Racism and the Australian Working Class” edited by Ann Curthoys and Andrew Markus (1978).
Published during the rise of One Nation, racism has yet again become the bosses’ tool for dividing working people. While nearing 50 years old, this foundational collection still has much to offer in understanding Australian racism, anti-racism, and the working class.
